Rep. Chris Taylor (D – Madison) speaks out against SB 507 (from Senate Committee on Public Health, Human Services, and Revenue on Feb. 29, 2012)
Senate Bill 507, a bill which chastises unwed mothers, has been proposed by Wisconsin senator Glenn Grothman. Grothman, who has never been married and who has no children of his own, seeks to criminalize single or unmarried parents.
During a time of a staggering 50% divorce rate and couples who decide not to marry, this proposed bill is simply an act of the regression of American values.
If passed into law, SB507 would formally consider single parenthood a contributing factor to child abuse. Since most single parents are women, it doesn’t take a Vince Lombardi to see that the game plan here is to inch toward criminalizing a woman’s state of nonmarriage.
The official description of the bill, found on Wisconsin’s official legislative website, reads:
relating to: requiring the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.
There are no absolutes when it comes to households and parenting and no category should be isolated and victimized. Does this mean that single parents in Wisconsin will have to marry in order to keep custody of their child? What a setback for not only women’s rights, but also homosexual rights as well.
