A recently posted YouTube video demonstrates that the TSA’s insistence that the nude body scanner program is effective and necessary is nothing but a fraud, just like their claims that the program is safe (radiation, what?) and non-invasive (nude pictures, who?).
The scanners are now effectively worthless, as anyone can beat them with virtually no effort. The TSA has been provided this video in advance of it being made public to give them an opportunity to turn off the scanners and revert to the metal detectors. I personally believe they now have no choice but to turn them off.
I’d like to direct your attention to this paper, published in the Journal of Transportation Security in November 2010, which presents evidence that a pancake-shaped disc of explosives, attached to a person’s belly and tapered at the edge toward their skin, would be extremely difficult to impossible to detect by the scanners. The authors estimate you could sneak a third of a kilo of PETN onto a plane with this method, an amount that would be easily detected by a patdown.
The official blog regarding the issue can be found here.
