A Boston Local Music Surprise

The Novel Ideas playing at the party

By Kerry Clayton

This past Saturday night, I was part of a successful surprise birthday party for a friend that lead to another Boston local music experience. The Novel Ideas were hired by a friend to play a set during the party, and I could not have been happier!

My friend whose party it was saw The Novel Ideas perform at EC Radio’s Music Festival a few weeks back, and he really appreciated their music. As a birthday present, two of our mutual friends got a hold of the band and hired them to play at his party.

Reasons I have recently become a fan of The Novel Ideas:

Their new album, Home, can be downloaded here.

If you enjoy the jokes and interesting anecdotes exchanged during each break in songs and quality music, then definitely keep an eye out for The Novel Ideas to play another show. If you don’t enjoy these things…Well, I definitely recommend them.

Emmanuel College Music Fest Features Many Local Bands

By Kerry Clayton

For one of their last events of the semester, EC Radio held a free Music Fest on the quad this past Saturday.

I caught nearly all 12 bands that played the show. Not only was each one talented, but they were all unique. Many of the bands stayed for the entire six hour show to listen to one another, which I felt showed a great kinship and support of the local music scene. Some bands gave out free demo recordings to Emmanuel students and told us about upcoming shows they are playing.

Some of the bands at the concert were Long Lost, Tea Leigh, Steve Subrizi, Devil and A Penny, and Camden. My favorite performances were by guys named Max and Mulholland and the band The Novel Ideas. I absolutely recommend checking them out; they sound a little like The Decemberists and Fleet Foxes.

The goal of the show was for EC Radio to raise money for a charity to help tornado victims in the Midwest.

“The show was diverse, fun, and had a good turn-out. We are proud to have raise some money for charity and hope that it can be of help.”

-Sarah Tortora, EC Radio Event Coordinator

Next year there will be plenty more live music events on Emmanuel’s campus. College students can look forward to one more EC Radio open mic event for the semester this Thursday, April 26th, from 8-11pm.

“Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble” in Cambridge

By Kerry Clayton

You won’t have to go far to find local music near Boston this weekend.

This Friday night, T.T. The Bear’s Place in Cambridge is hosting the final night of their “Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble” local band competition. If you, like myself, are a poor college student, the show is only $12.

Also, if you, like me, have never been there, then no worries! My roommate, Danielle, enjoyed the venue. She describes it as a small venue, but says that’s a benefit because you feel close to the live music.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Rumble finalists include Motherboar, Garvey J., Bow Thayer and the Perfect Trainwreck, and The Grownup Noise. Check out this video of the band Garvey J. playing the semi-finals on April 13:

The Phoenix reported that these four bands have competed in the Battle of the Bands-esque show over six nights: April 1-3, and 5-7. One band was awarded winner each show and moved onto the semi-finals, held on April 12 and 13.

The four finalists now have one last show to attempt a victory. The prizes include: air time on Boston Emissions radio show, recording time in a studio, and performance at the Tweed River Music Festival.
